Conversion of Malaysia Driving License to Singapore Driving License For PR (Permanent Resident) or SC holders (Singapore Citizen)

This article is to provide step by step how to convert your Malaysia driving license to Singapore Driving License. If you are (a) Singapore Permanent Resident or (b) Singapore Citizen (Previously you are Malaysia citizen but converted to Singaporean).

Please take note, for the license conversion, you will need to perform data extraction from Malaysia JPJ to prove that you obtain the Malaysia License before you got your Singapore Citizenship / Permanent Resident Status. In any case that you obtain the PR / SC first, you are required to sit the full driving test in Singapore. (Theory and Practical test).

Just follow the 3 simple steps provided below.

Step 1 : Pass your BTT Test (Basic Theory Test)

You may book the BTT test at any of the 3 driving schools in Singapore or have the slot registration through their website. Below are the 3 driving schools address and website URL. Pick one which is near to your place.

a) Woodlands Driving Test Centre
level 1, co-located with the Singapore Safety Driving Centre
Address:  2, Woodlands Industrial Park E4 Singapore 757387.

Step 2 : Obtain the data extraction of foreign driving license
Pay a visit to any of JPJ (Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia), in the information counter, tell the officer you want to convert your driving license to Singapore Driving license. The officer will provide you a form to fill. Remember to photocopy your driving license and your Malaysia IC (myKad) and bring along the original as well.
**If you already converted to Singaporean at that point of time, you need to bring along Malaysia Driving License, Singapore Passport (Original & Photocopy).
The fee for the data extraction is RM10:00. Please remember to check, if you have different class of license, the letter has to state clearly when is the date you passed the test.

ii) A valid qualified foreign driving license.
iii) An extract of driving license record (as in step 2 above, the letter do not required photocopy).
iv) A recent passport size photograph with matt or semi-matt white background. (You can take from the photo booth in the driving school).
   v) A fee of $50.00 (NETS/Cashcard).

a) SC Holders (Singapore Citizen).
     i) Singapore Passport.
    ii) Singapore NRIC (pink IC).
   iii) Singapore Citizen Certificate.
iv) Malaysia renounce letter (Borang K)
    v) A valid qualified foreign driving license.
vi) An extract of driving license record (as in step 2 above, the letter do not required photocopy).
vii) A recent passport size photograph with matt or semi-matt white background. (You can take from the photo booth in the driving school).
  viii) A fee of $50.00 (NETS/Cashcard).

After the payment, you are required to watch a short video (about 10 mins) before you can get your temporary driving license slip paper. The license will mail to you within ONE month.
**SGD $50 fee is for lifelong. Do not required to renew like Malaysia driving license.

**From what you can see on the required document, if you had converted to SC, the documents required is more. Its advisable you convert your license before you obtain the SC. After conversion to SC, you might need to explain more when you try to obtain the extraction of data from JPJ as well.

  1. Hello! Thanks for writing this. Yours is the most recent article I could find!

Did JPJ take away your malaysian driver's license? I've read different accounts of people having their licenses destroyed / taken away / blacklisted, etc. Is yours still valid for use?

I even called up SSDC and they said that if you're PR (which I am), your license will be taken away.

    1. Hi, thank you for visiting the blog. The answer for did JPJ take my license or not is NO. Until now I am still holding my Malaysia license.
When you apply for the letter at JPJ, they will pass you a form to sign where it contains the details. If my memory didn't failed me I think it does mentioned something like your license will be cancelled automatically when it reach your next birthday and it does also mentioned how to convert back.

    3. Hi NoName, when I said NO, is referring to when you request to take the letter from JPJ, they did not asked me to surrender my Malaysia license to them and I am still holding the license.

    4. hi, thank you for this post, it is really the most clear article for malaysia license conversion. had been reading around with mixed information.

i guess only JPJ johor would blacklist your license when you ask for extract, as a way for those "agent" to earn coffee money

  3. Hi Jess Tee, so sorry I think I miss out your message.
At the point of my conversion, no expiry date. But this might change, will be good to check with Singaporw police traffic counter in the driving schools.

  4. Hi, I read that a license conversion can be done only within 3 months after converting to PR. Is that still hold valid? Did you convert after 3 months after becoming a PR/citizen?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Eugene, thank you for visiting my blog.
As for your question, license conversion can be done only within 3 mths after converting to pr or citizen. I never came across of this but many of my friends only convert their license after many years getting holding the pr. As for citizen, by right you need to convert and settle everything before you convert to citizen or at least changed your ic because Malaysia license is tie to your Malaysia IC and once you renouce you no longer hold Malaysia ic and in short the license consider unusable.
Hope this information help :) have a nice day ahead

  10. Hi, can i extract the data from JPJ before i go for BTT?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Liz, yes but not advisable as after the extraction your Malaysia license will tag to be expired. (If the rules didn't change)
Will be good to have the extractions after you had pass the test in Singapore here to reduce any complication.

  19. Hi there, I held a student pass back in 2003 and went back to sit the driving exam in Malaysia some time in 2005 over my holiday. Thereafter, I settled down and became a Singapore PR in 2012.

I am thinking to convert my msia driving license to Singapore license, do you think it's possible?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi,
Yes I think this is possible. The reason why they ask for the data extraction mainly is to proof that you have your Malaysia license before your singapore PR. if not in such case, they will ask u to reseat the whole theory and practical test in Singapore.
      All the best

    2. Thanks! So it means they won't check on my student pass status? Because before my PR conversion I was a student in Singapore :)

  20. Is only refer to PR if I am not wrong. Well, no harm asking, you can just approach the counter and ask about this before you start to register for the conversion. It's always good to counter check. Furthermore rules might change from time to time. :)

I would like to check after the conversion, will I still be able to drive in malaysia with my Singapore license?

    Thank you~

  23. Hi,

If I unable to do the data extraction before converting to Singapore citizen, I can still do it with my Msia driving license and Singapore passport? I saw your post after data extraction within 3 months Msia licence will be ceased? I extracted last year but I haven't do the conversion, can I request data extraction one more time?

  24. One more document to bring in Step 2, other than photocopy & original Malaysia IC & Driving License, please bring along your photocopy of your Singapore NRIC/Work Pass. The officer did not ask for original from me.

  27. Hi there would you mind sharing which blog platform you're using? I'm going to start my own blog soon but I'm having a difficult time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask! gmail email login
